Review: Plague Invader: Survival Wars has become one of the longest idle games I’ve ever played, and while its hands-off gameplay initially appealed to me—allowing me to enjoy the game without a massive time commitment—recent changes have left me questioning whether it’s worth my continued investment. Before the arrival of the Astro Prophet, I found it challenging to compete against teams comprising two or three healers, with Sublime Spear seemingly being my only chance at victory. However, hypocrisy soon reigned when I discovered that even Sublime could be countered by the healers, rendering it—and the hero I had invested so much time in—practically useless. The imbalance in character effectiveness makes it incredibly challenging to take on healer teams, which begs the question: what’s the point of having an anti-heal hero if they fail to perform in crucial moments?

After dedicating nine months to this game, I can’t help but feel frustrated with the developers’ decisions. With each update, instead of resolving issues, they seem to exacerbate them, prompting many players—including myself—to consider quitting. The summoning system has also been a source of contention. Isn’t it frustrating to find that you’ll get nothing from interstellar summons unless you reach the full summon count? It felt like a pointless grind, and even players who would summon diligently had little chance of securing heroes until that magical number was reached. Fortunately, the game has changed its tune slightly by allowing players to receive heroes even if they haven’t met the maximum summon requirements—an enjoyable update I appreciate.

In terms of gameplay experience, this title has proven to be entertaining without leaning heavily into pay-to-win dynamics. Additionally, there are no intrusive ads, which adds to the overall enjoyment. If you find yourself feeling bored, I would recommend giving the game a shot. However, this enthusiasm is stunted by the increasing difficulty curve that plagues late-game progression. While the early chapters were relatively easy at just ten clearings, as I moved forward, I was met with increasingly insurmountable challenges. The more frequent changes introduced in updates seem to reflect poor design choices, leading me to speculate that the developers might be more focused on monetization than player experience.

The payment wall has only gotten higher, creating an environment where it’s challenging to progress without parting with real cash. For instance, players can no longer purchase event currency using diamonds, which effectively cuts off a significant pathway that made previous events enjoyable. The events themselves are losing appeal too, with rewards diminishing in value while costs dramatically increase. Long gone are the days when players could partake in events and emerge having spent a minimal amount of money. Now, it feels like a constant grind with a towering price tag.

It’s disheartening to see the game devolving into a less balanced state, one that prioritizes a ‘pay-to-win’ philosophy over a fun, competitive environment. Many voices in the community are clamoring for change, demanding mechanisms that allow free-to-play players to cultivate competitive teams without needing to open their wallets. The inability to properly log back into my account after resetting my factory data only amplified my frustrations, particularly after investing countless hours into optimizing my characters.

However, I remain cautiously optimistic, as I’ve seen players successfully navigate paywalls by implementing strategic spending and participating in the right events. By carefully selecting when to invest resources, those who are diligent can still thrive in the game. Despite my criticisms, I still believe Plague Invader offers unique gameplay mechanics, inviting designs, and a challenging environment that can be genuinely rewarding for those willing to sift through the negatives and embrace the grind. But for others, like me, the excitement of playing might just run out.
